Within the field of International Economics, Pedro Schwartz has long defended trade freedom, both within and between countries, and has published a book written in collaboration with F. Cabrillo and J. García Legaz containing a proposal for the creation of An Open Atlantic Prosperity Area, a free-trade area between the USA and the EU, open to other nations of the world by means of the "Most Favoured Nation Clause".
He has recently published the second edition of the book about liberal democracy and the dangers to it from nationalism and welfare socialism, titled "In Search of Montesquieu: the dangers of democracy".
At the Centre of Political Economy and Regulation, he directs studies on the application of economic analysis to regulation of markets that are not very competitive; and more generally of public choice. The latest study is a pamphlet on school vouchers applied to Universities.
Dr. Schwartz has started consultations to set up a new think tank called "Wealth and Poverty", whose object will be the application of classical liberalism and market economics to poor nations in the Portuguese and Spanish world of Africa and Latin America.
